THE DRAWING IS THE MOVABLE FEAST

PROTO GOMEZ presents The Drawing is The Movable Feast, a continuation of the recent PROTO Gallery Artsy online-exclusive exhibition, The Drawing is the Wide Open Window, (Jan 5 – Feb 28, 2019) which featured a selection of drawings by ten artists known for their work in other media. This exhibition is the second in what is envisioned to be an ongoing series dedicated to reviewing the role that drawing plays within a diverse range of artmaking practices.

Entitled The Drawing is The Moveable Feast, this installment features an unframed, clinical survey of eight artists’ ongoing dialogue with drawing as both an ancillary, investigatory support for their work in other mediums as well as a cogent vehicle and resource within which to explore their varied and aesthetic concerns. Housed at PROTO GOMEZ Gallery from Thursday May 9th through Saturday June 1st, 2019, the laboratory-like exhibition encourages an intimate look at the works on display, presented unframed atop two glass tables within the gallery. Attendants will be on hand to assist and visitors can wear supplied cotton gloves with which to peruse, turn, handle and consider more closely the works on view.

Louis Ardine is a multi-disciplinary artist received a BFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2018 with a concentration in sculpture. His work was featured recently in the SOFT REBOOT group exhibition at PROTO Gallery. Drawing has become an integral focus of his work and life functioning as a meditative process which, for him, highlights the role of the artist as present observer. Working diligently and mindfully, the process of drawing becomes an experience of present awareness and discovery as a means of feeling joy and intuition.

Kat Chamberlin was born in the Netherlands and spent her childhood in Turkey and is now a Brooklyn-based conceptual artist whose work centers on fictions that fill vacuums of historic knowledge, such as legends, conspiracies or supernatural phenomena. She holds a BFA in painting from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a MFA in performance art and sculpture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Chicago Cultural Center, (Chicago, IL), Barbara and Steven Grossman Gallery (Boston, MA) and Gana Art (New York, NY). Her recent solo exhibition at Wick Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, opened in March of 2019.

Brian Edmonds is an artist and curator based in Huntsville, AL, where he paints abstract compositions of symbols and shapes which seek to evade direct interpretation, instead suggesting a flattened space into which the viewers imagination is projected. In 2012, Edmonds launched Curating Contemporary, a website hosting artist-curated exhibitions on a rotating monthly basis. His work has been exhibited recently at The Provincial (Kaleva, MI), Lowe Mill (Huntsville, AL), Gallery Molly Krom (New York, NY) and Look&Listen, (Saint Charmas, FR).

Rachael Gorchov is an interdisciplinary sculptor working in mixed media, often with a material specialization in ceramics, focused on relationships between physical form and colorful painted imagery. Her work has been included in several recent group exhibitions at, Overhang Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Scotty Enterprises (Berlin, Germany), and PROTO Gallery. She recently completed a residency at The Cooper Union (New York, NY) and had a solo exhibition at Owen James Gallery in 2017. Additionally, Gorchov is a writer, independent curator, and co-director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York (Brooklyn, NY). She earned a BFA from Tyler school of Art, Temple University (Elkins Park, PA) and a MFA from Hunter College, City University of New York (New York,NY).

John Kramer is a Chicago-area multi-disciplinary artist. He eared a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and studied sculpture at Ox-bow. Kramer’s work explores American social politics and masculinity through seemingly campy sculptures fabricated from everyday, yet culturally loaded, materials. He has recently exhibited work at The Co-Prosperity Sphere (Chicago, IL), Gallery 400 (Chicago, IL), Four Eleven Gallery (Provincetown, MA), and several of his mixed media sculptures were included in BARBERINI or Totes Masc for Samesies at PROTO Gallery in 2018.

Anna Ortiz (born 1979, Worcester MA) is a painter primarily focused on creating socio-psychological landscapes. Her work reflects on global issues through painterly collapses and constructions. Ortiz received a BA/BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. During her undergraduate years, she spent a year studying at the Louvre in Paris. Ortiz completed her MFA at Tyler School of Art, spending her second year in Rome Italy. Her work has been exhibited at Lesley Heller Gallery NY, Transmitter Gallery, NY, Storefront Ten Eyck NY and Galeria Il Polittico Rome, among others. Ortiz and her work have been featured in publications including Huffington Post, Two Coats of Paint, and Culture Catch. The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn NY.

Charles Sommer (born 1989, New Jersey) attained his BFA from the University of South Florida in 2012, and his MFA from CUNY Brooklyn College in 2018. His work has been exhibited at Trestle Gallery, NY, Brooklyn College, NY, Wassaic Projects, Wassaic, NY, and Cornell University, Ithica, NY, among others. He has also won various awards such as the Morris Dorsky Memorial Award, the Norma Roth Award and has been featured by publications including Two Coats of Paint, Corner Magazine and Drawing Currents. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Denise Treizman is an artist born and raised in Chile, now based in New York with a studio at Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program in Manhattan. She holds a MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, and has been invited to numerous residencies including, Ox-Bow, MASS MoCA Assets for Artists, and Vermont Studio Center. Her work repurposes and collages ready-made found objects, often combining them with brightly-glazed ceramics to create a unique composition. Treizman created an interactive public artwork for FLOW.16 at Randall’s Island Park and has been included in several recent group exhibitions at PROTO Gallery, Wave Hill, Ortega y Gasset Projects, and Alfa Gallery. In 2017 she had solo exhibitions at Soho20 Gallery, +/- Project Space, and at MEN Gallery, and she was the ArtSlant Round 5 Juried Winner for Installation Art. She is represented by PROTO Gallery and had a solo exhibition, THE MARSHMALLOW METHOD, in 2018.
